What We Can Promise

Dana Holt is the person Pinewake calls when a map is wrong, a rescue needs a field leader or someone has to make the plan work. She is good at being useful. Making room for something she simply wants, like the film camera she has kept boxed away, is harder.

Paramedic Mateo Fraser says only what he knows he can deliver. He can ask Dana on a real date. He can show up. He can bring her into the warm, close-knit life he has built in Pinewake. But by the time he knows he is falling in love, he is already trying to design a future before risking the words.

Their chemistry burns fast. Trust does not. As ordinary dates start to look like a shared life, Dana's instinct to take over and Mateo's habit of withholding uncertainty turn their strengths against each other. When pride cuts too deep, competence cannot repair what they have broken.

To choose a future together, they will have to learn that love is not a guarantee. It is a question asked honestly, an answer freely given and a promise renewed when the plan changes.
