What Holds in Winter

Emergency physician Tessa Ward comes to Pinewake, Colorado, to strengthen medical readiness for the county's volunteer mountain-rescue team. The assignment is temporary by design. She fixes difficult systems, keeps her exit open and moves on before any place can ask too much of her.

Sam Calder leads rescues, runs an electrical business and raises his nine-year-old daughter. He knows the team needs Tessa's expertise. He also knows that rules written for paid departments can break the volunteers who keep Pinewake safe. Then Tessa learns the apartment the hospital rented belongs to Sam, leaving them to work and live side by side through one dangerous winter.

Their clashes turn into respect. Shared training, rescue calls and ordinary evenings turn respect into something neither planned. But Tessa's contract has an end date, and Sam will not build his daughter's life around someone temporary.

As the winter closes in and their twelve weeks run out, Tessa must decide whether choosing a home means losing her freedom. Sam must learn that accepting help is not the same as failing the people he loves.
